LAOS EXPECTS US$ 400 MILLION IN DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANCE FOR 2003

VIENTIANE, JANUARY 02 (KPL) The Planning and Cooperation Committee expects to attract US$ 409.1 million in grant aid and loans from foreign donors for development this year.
Some US$ 252 million of the 2002-2003 plan, says the committee, should be in the form of free assistance. This target figure was presented at the annual meeting of the committee held in Vientiane on December 30.
According to the committee, the general direction for 2002-2003 is to constantly develop the economy toward industrialisation and modernisation, build up economic infrastructure and maintain the stability of the macro-economy while ensuring security and social order. In addition, the committee will focus on social and human resource development.
During the 2001-2002 period, the Lao PDR received US$ 389.62 million in foreign assistance, of which US$ 240.22 million was grant aid and US$ 149.4 million was in the form of loans. This was a 0.1 per cent increase on previous assistance.
